Celebration & Mayoral Inauguration: “Christmas in Newport” at Colony House

Forum members ended the year with a celebration of “Christmas in Newport” at Colony House with an architectural tour of the  Colony House (1739) designed by Richard Munday. The evening also included food, drink and live traditional holiday music by a violin duet before the lighting of a bonfire and the firing of the 18th century canons in Washington Square.

Charrette: Thames and Spring Street Value Setting, Walking Audit and Design Charrette organized by City of Newport

Forum members were invited to participate in a charrette with a focus on Thames and Spring Street. Program included Value Setting, Walking Audit and Design Charrette organized by City of Newport.

Documentary Screening: The New Rijksmuseum at Jane Pickens Theatre

The Forum organized 4 sequential one hour screenings of The New Rijksmuseum, which showed the story of a ten year process to renovate Amsterdam’s central museum, including the twists, turns and eventual success of the project. The Screening was organized at the historic and lovely at Jane Pickens Theatre and Event Center, own by Forum member Kathy Staab.

Declaration: “Newport World Heritage Commission” by Governor Chafee at the Colony House

Forum members were invited to participate in the official inauguration of a “Newport World Heritage Commission” by Governor Chafee at the Colony House with other preservation leaders from around the city and state.

Panel Discussion: Water Use and management on Aquidneck Island by SRU

Many Forum members attended a Panel Discussion on  “Water Use and management on Aquidneck Island,” which was hosted by Salve Regina University at the Pell Center.

Presentation & Cocktails: “Rhody Preservation Awards” at Aldrich Mansion by Preserve Rhode Island

Forum member received a substantial discount to attend the cocktails and presentation of the “Rhody Preservation Awards” at Aldrich Mansion by Preserve Rhode Island, which included several Newport projects. 




September 19-20, 2014

Panel & Charrette: “Planning Newport’s Open Space Future” at Jane Pickens Theatre organized by Newport Open Space

Forum members received a special invitation to the panel on “Planning Newport’s Open Space Future” at Jane Pickens Theatre organized by Newport Open Space.  The next day many Forum members were invited to participate in the Design Professionals Charrette on open space as preparation for a more public open space charrette to be held in the future.

Gala: Dinner & reception: Presentation of the Doris Duke Preservation Awards at Rough Point by Newport Restoration Foundation

Once again the Forum members were accorded “professional status” by the Newport Restoration Foundation to the Gala Dinner & Presentation of the Doris Duke Preservation Awards at Rough Point. Savings on this event alone rebated members they annual dues several times over.

Book Launch and Singing: Bettie Pardee’s Living Newport at Rosecliff in association with the PSNC

Forum members were accorded a membership discount and were in strong attendance at the Book Launch and Singing of Bettie Pardee’s Living Newport at Rosecliff in association with the Preservation Society of Newport County.

Many Forum members attended the very interesting and insightful panel discussion on “The Future of Historic Cities” at Casino Theatre in association with the van Beuren Charitable Foundation.

Celebration of the reading of the Declaration of Independence at the Old Colony House in Newport, RI in concert with the Washington Square Roots Initiative

The Forum once again helped organize the Celebration of the reading of the Declaration of Independence at the Old Colony House—the same place the Declaration was original read to the people of Newport back in 1776!

Master Class: with Norman McGrath, architectural photographer by Newport Photo Guild at Newport Art Museum

Forum members received a particular invitation to the master class: given by architectural photographer Norman McGrath at the Newport Art Museum and presented by the Newport Photo Guild.

Reception & Tour: Welcoming the National Trust Seminar participants and Trustees at Vareika Gallery and Bellevue House

Forum members attended a cocktail reception at the Vareika Gallery and enjoyed a private tour of Ogden Codman’s 1910 Berkeley Villa to welcome the National Trust Seminar participants and Trustees to Newport.

Exhibition Opening: McKim commissioned photos of Newport by PSNC at Bell House

Forum members attended the special exhibition opening of the photos of Newport commissioned by Charles Follett McKim. These were presented by the Preservation Society of Newport County and exhibited at the Isaac Bell House, the shingle style masterpiece design by McKim Mead and White in 1883.

2014 Newport Architectural Symposium on Richard Morris Hunt in association with the Tennis Hall of Fame

2014 The Architectural Forum was once again a principal organizer and sponsor of the annual Newport Architectural Symposium held at the Newport Casino. This year the theme was Richard Morris Hunt, who was a frequent visitor to Newport and who was known as the “Dean of American Architects” for his great contributions to the profession.

Newport House Tour in association with St. Michael’s Parent Assoc.

Forum members were extended a discount to participate in the Newport House Tour sponsored by the St. Michael’s Parent Association. House on the tour included McKim Mead and White’s Commodore William Edgar House (1886) and Ossory House (1867) among four others.

Conference: Annual State-wide Rhode Island Preservation Conference in Warren, RI organized by the RIHPHC

The Newport Architectural Forum was again an official sponsor of the 2014 Annual State-wide Rhode Island Preservation Conference organized by the RIHPHC. Each year the conference has a different location and a different theme. In 2014 the location was in Warren, RI and the theme was “Pride in Preservation.”

Forum members were invited and to attend a special lecture at Emmanuel Church.in Newport on: “Environmental and Energy Upgrades” that help save money and fight global climate change.

Forum members were invited and many chose to attend the exhibition opening of “The Art of Interiors” at Redwood Library and curated my member Forum participant Paul Miller.

Screening of “Evening” at the Casino Theatre

Forum members attended a screening of “Evening” at the Casino Theatre, which is set at the Ledges in Newport and captured the architectural elegance of that place beautifully.
